Kolar Mangoes Head For Delhi In Karnataka's First Kisan Rail

Karnataka's first Kisan Rail carrying 250 tonnes of mango grown in Kolar region chugged off from Doddanatta halt station (Chintamani), Kolar district for Adarsh Nagar Station, Delhi on June 19. S Muniswamy, Member of Parliament, Kolar with M Krishna Reddy, Chintamani MLA flagged off the train in the presence of Ashok Kumar Verma, divisional railway manager, Bengaluru division of Hubballi headquartered South Western Railway (SWR).

Indian Railways started 'Kisan Rail' services in the union budget 2020-21. The primary objective of these trains is to increase income in the farm sector by connecting production centres to markets and consumpion centres across every corner of the country and are run on time-tabled paths. Their punctuality is monitored very strictly to avoid detentions en-route. This will be helpful in the swift transport of fruits, vegetables and other perishable agricultural produce across the nation.

250 Tonnes Of Mangoes Grown In Kolar Region Enroute New Delhi
The ministry of food processing and industries grants a 50% subsidy in the tariffs chargeable for transportation of fruits and vegetables by Kisan Rail so that farmers who avail of its services, in turn, benefit from it. Kisan Rail trains will help in transporting perishables, agri-produce such as fruits and vegetables to the markets in various places across the country. This in turn will enable farmers/producers to realise better value for their products.

ECONOMICAL, FASTER TO TRANSPORT BY TRAIN

Ashok Kumar Verma said that the transport of farm produce by train through Kisan Rail is cheaper and faster than by road. The road transport cost is about ₹7-8/kg whereas (with subsidy applied) the transport cost per kg by Kisan Rail is just ₹2.82. South Western Railway aimed to run at least 1 Kisan rail train every 2-3 days and is committed to assist farmers transport tomatoes, onions and other seasonal products to the markets across the nation based on demand.

By road, the transport time to Delhi is about 3-4 days, whereas the Kisan Rail will reach by 40 hours only.

S Muniswamy said this scheme will benefit farmers, particularly fruits and vegetable growers. This scheme of the ministry of railways will benefit the farmers, fruit and vegetable producers of the Kolar region. He praised the efforts of Railways, to come forward and help farmers reach their produce to the market in the difficult time of the Covid19 pandemic when they are facing difficulty to sell their produce, which are highly perishable items. 

Farm Producers Organisations should come forward and utilise the services of Kisan Rail trains. Kolar is famous as the biggest producer of mangoes in Asia, and grows mangoes over 1.44-lakh acres, MP said while urging farmers to make use of Kisan Rails to transport farm produce such as tomatoes, onions in the seasons of their harvest. Such initiatives will help farmers double their income through gaining better market access and better price realisation for their farm produce, consequently.
