ICD Whitefield Receives 25th Oxygen Express

It was a landmark moment when the 25th Oxygen Express reached the Inland Container Depot (ICD), Whitefield, Bengaluru at 10am on June 4. This train started from Kanalus, Jamnagar in Gujarat at 9.10am on June 3 with a consignment of 84.75 tonnes of liquid medical oxygen in four cryogenic containers. All these 25 incoming rakes and 25 outgoing rakes have achieved an average speed in excess of 80kmph in the Bengaluru division.

The average speed achieved in the case of BLC wagons carrying cryogenic container for the total journey is also in the range of 67 to 68kmph which is quite substantial considering the distance between covered is between 1800 to1900 km. Once these Oxygen express trains reach ICD, it takes only 10 minutes to unload the containers. Once these containers are decanted onto road tankers, the same is loaded back and returned in a very short time.

The road tankers are then sent to various consumption points across the state. This is a very efficient system that ensures optimum utilization of rakes and cryogenic containers by optimizing the combination of trains, cryogenic containers and road tankers. Some of these trains were run by an all-female crew. Running of Oxygen express trains by an all-female crew in Bengaluru division has also featured in Prime Minister‘s Mann Ki Baat Programme on 30th May 2021.

These Oxygen express trains have immensely helped in improving the availability of oxygen in Karnataka during the most difficult phase of the pandemic. So far, Karnataka has received 2869.22 tonnes of LMO by Rail. Indian Railways has so far run more than 350 Oxygen Expresses and transported more than 24387 tonnes of LMO by 1438 tankers to all over the country and brought relief to more than 33 cities and towns in 15 states in their fight against Covid19.
