NMPT handles fifth Naval Ship INS Shardul carrying 190 MT of LMO/1200 O2 cylinders from Kuwait.

New Mangalore Port Trust on May 25 handled the fifth Indian Navy vessel - INS Shardul which carried approximately 190 metric tonnes of liquid medical oxygen (LMO) and 1200 oxygen cylinders from Kuwait. The cargo was loaded on the naval vessel at Shuwaikh Port and sailed out on May 15 from Kuwait. To date, five naval vessels have arrived at NMPT carrying medical oxygen and equipment under the Samudra Setu-II operation launched by the Indian Navy.

The vessel, which is the lead ship of the Shardul-class amphibious warfare vessels of the Navy, carried seven LMO filled ISO containers of net weight 20 MT each, 60 pallets of oxygen cylinders of one ton and two semi-trailers filled with 25 tons of liquid medical oxygen each. The vessel was berthed on the highest priority. MMPT extended all its resources for berthing the vessel and handling the life-saving cargo on zero charges as per directives of the ministry of ports, shipping and waterways.

A semi-trailer containing LMO Was Offloaded At New Mangalore Port 
Binoy Nambiar, nodal officer for Oxygen supplies to Dakshina Kannada district said two of the seven LMO containers and one semi-trailer has been allocated to Dakshina Kannada, one LMO container and one semi-trailer to Udupi and the rest of the containers and oxygen pallets allocated to Uttara Kannada, Mysuru, Mandya, Hassan, Shivamogga and Tumakuru. The Indian Community Support Group in Kuwait too contributed its mite by channelling the supplies to the Indian Red Cross Society.

Akkaraju Venkata Ramana, chairman, NMPT, Dr K V Rajendra, deputy commissioner, KG Nath, deputy chairman, NMPT, S B Venkatesh. Commander, Coast Guard - Karnataka, senior officers of the Port, Navy, Coast Guard, Customs and district Administration were present.

A V Ramana, chairman appreciated the various services extended by the stakeholders of the port free of charges. One of the stevedores M/s Sri Ganesh Shipping Agency supported in safe handling and transit of oxygen tankers and cylinders from the Port for zero-charge. The medical oxygen will be utilized to meet the state’s oxygen exigency in dealing with the pandemic. The state and district will coordinate with the Indian Red Cross Society in handling further such cargo at the Port.
