Museums - treasure house of information face Covid19 Brunt

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF MUSEUMS~2021

Mysuru division of South Western Railways has been compelled to close both its Mysuru rail museum at Mysuru city as well as the Malgudi Museum at Arasalu in Shivamogga district for visitors. This is the result of the devastating second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic and resultant lockdowns. With a state-wide lockdown in place as part of officially #breakthechain, consequently, plans for the addition of artefacts and features have been rendered difficult.

The focus is now on sustaining the operations meaningfully notwithstanding the fact that the resources are limited with an eye towards the future consistent with this year’s theme of International Day of Museums - 2021 - The Future of Museums: Recover and Reimagine'. The Mysore rail museum was set up in 1979 as the first regional rail museum with an aim to preserve few relics from the era of steam transportation. The museum was completely redesigned and refurbished in 2019-20

Rahul Agarwal, divisional railway manager, Mysuru division has urged the nodal department managing the affairs of the museums to devise innovative schemes to augment revenue in a big way. He has also sought the cooperation of corporate Houses to contribute funds under corporate social responsibility initiatives on creating more interactive facilities in the Rail Museum to make it truly world-class.

Agarwal further said that Mysuru Rail Museum had played a pivotal role in preserving many of the remnants of the historical journey of the Railways in this region for over 140 years. “While we are all in isolation and confined to our homes, the Railways continue to contributing significantly in mitigating the sufferings of the people even during this standstill, Agarwal added.

The official asked individuals to record their experiences in a diary, or videos, which can later become a part of the narrative of the museum with voices being mainly from economically marginalised groups like migrant labourers to ordinary citizens as to how they have responded to the crisis. People can take the virtual route to the Mysuru rail museum to understand the evolution of the railways founded by the rulers of the erstwhile princely State of Mysore.

This, Agarwal said is a short to medium-long term scenario solution for it may take a while for people to come back to the brick and mortar buildings that house the two museums. Malgudi museum at Arasalu is about 30-km from Shivamogga city. The museum renovated by the Mysuru division of SWR in 2020 has steam engines and bogies besides a collection of photographs taken during the time of shooting for Malgudi Days that are displayed on the wall.
