Push given by Indian Railways to supply liquid medical oxygen to states battling a second wave of the pandemic saw Karnataka receive its 11th and 12 Oxygen Express on May 25. While the 11th Oxygen Express reached ICD Whitefield, Bengaluru at 6.10am, the 12th touched base with ICD at 9.49am carrying 238.5 tonnes of LMO in all in 12 cryogenic containers - six on each of these special trains.

While the 11th O2 Express started from Rourkela, Odisha at 9.30pm on May 23 carrying 124.19 tonnes of LMO in six cryogenic containers, the 12th LMO departed from Kanalus, Jamnagar in Gujarat at 4.30am on May 24. This train carried 114.31 tonnes LMO. Indian Railways as is the norm for these trains created a signal-free 'Green Corridor' to enable swift transport of this lifesaver.

Thus far, Karnataka has received 1420.64 tonnes of LMO by Rail. Indian Railways has so far run more than 247 Oxygen Expresses and transported more than 16000 tonnes of LMO all over the country to assist respective state governments in their fight against Covid19. Authorities of South Western Railway coordinated the arrival of these trains with their counterparts in the zonal railway concerned.

Karnataka Received Two More Oxygen Special Trains At ICD, Whitefield On May 25.
In order to ensure that Oxygen relief reaches in the fastest time possible, Railways is creating new standards and unprecedented benchmarks in running of Oxygen Express Freight Trains. The average speed of these critical freight trains is way above 55kmph in most cases over long distances. Tracks are kept open and high alertness is maintained to ensure that Oxygen Express keeps zipping through.

Running on high priority green corridor, with the highest sense of urgency, operational teams of various zones are working round the clock in the most challenging circumstances to ensure that Oxygen reaches the destination in the fastest possible time frame. Technical stoppages have been reduced to 1 minute for crew changes over different sections, according to the railway ministry, monitoring these trains.

All this is done in a manner that the speed of other freight operation does not get reduced as well. Indian Railways has mapped different routes with oxygen supply locations and keeps itself ready with any emerging need of the states, which provide tankers to the Indian Railways for bringing LMO. Running of new Oxygen is a very dynamic exercise.
