Namma 112 - Now Single Point Emergency Contact Number In Karnataka
THE DAY IS May 5 & ‘100’ and other numbers that India dialled when in distress joined history pages in Karnataka. For on this day, state’s transition from ‘Dial100’ to ‘Namma 112’, country’s unified equivalent of ‘911’ is complete with its roll out in Kalaburagi. Started as ‘Dial100’ by then Bengaluru city police Chief Praveen Sood in 2017, it has moved to Namma 112 under his stewardship as head of state police force (HoSPF) 4-years later.

‘From May 5, there will be no longer 100, 101, 102 or 103 in Karnataka. It will be only 112 – a unified one point contact for people facing any sort of distress which the above numbers addressed thus far,” says Praveen Sood. If ‘Dial100’ saw Bengaluru City Police roll out 286 Hoysala Patrol vehicles with a 15/15 promise, Namma 112 has a fleet of 786 patrol vehicles positioned in the city police commissionerates and district police units in Karnataka.

Dial 100 project as it was christened on launch strangely hit a lull till it was revived in 2019. “We had a state of the art control room for these 286 vehicles and this by logic should have been extended to the state,” Sood says. With Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa inaugurating the state control room in December 2019, the project that was positioned to function independent of police station as first responders was back on track, Sood adds.

When he took charge as HoSPF from incumbent Neelamani N Raju on January 31, 2020, the first project on his mind was for the statewide roll out Namma 100 as it was called then. “The state government sanctioned the police ₹35 crore for purchase of vehicles exclusively for this project across the police commissionerates and district police units,” he says. The pilot of Namma 112 was launched in Bagalkote, Haveri and Davanagere.

Since then, Karnataka State Police has rolled out this ambitious project in batches of 10, 10 and 7 policing units with Kalaburagi being the last to come on board. The 786 patrol vehicles, including the 286 in Bengaluru will be exclusively used for this project. The biggest push for the project came on January 16 when home minister Amit Shah flagged off 92 ERSS vehicles at a function in Bengaluru. These vehicles have since hit the roads hard.
15/15 PROMISE
“The 15/15 minute promise, that is answer calls within 15
seconds and rush assistance to the caller within 15 minutes are in the works. At
present, we answer calls within 4-5 seconds and reach a spot within 5-25
minutes for an average response time of 19 minutes. This will be down to 15
minutes when the new state-of-the-art command centre coming up in Bengaluru at
a cost of ₹100 crore will become operational in 2023, Soods adds.
The new command center will integrate both district and city
control rooms under one roof. Positioning of vehicles based on analysis of data
of calls received will help us meet the 15/15 promise, especially the latter
half of this promise. This will help us position the Namma 112 vehicles better
and cut down on the response time, he says. From here on, it will be the only
improvisation on the existing Namma 112 platform to serve people better, he
adds.
