INS Talwar reaches NMPT carrying 40 metric tonnes of Liquid Medical Oxygen.

Gateway to Karnataka – New Mangalore Port on May 5 handled the first Navy vessel INS Talwar carrying 40 metric tonnes Liquid Medical Oxygen filled in ISO tank containers under the Samudra Setu - II operation launched by the Indian Navy. This exercise comes at a time when the country is battling a serious second wave of Covid19 and facing excessive requirement of oxygen due to the unprecedented nature of the outbreak that began in March 2020.

On arrival, INS Talwar, the lead ship of the Talwar-class frigates of the Indian Navy was given highest priority berthing in the port at berth number 7. The Kingdom of Bahrain   has officially donated the above medical oxygen to the Government of Karnataka through the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) as a token of goodwill to overcome the current pandemic situation in the country. Local IRCS representatives accepted this consignment.

Indian Navy has transported the liquid medical oxygen under its “Operation Samudra Setu - II” which is launched to meet the oxygen requirement in the country. Under this, the Navy has deployed seven naval vessels for shipping liquid medical oxygen-filled containers and associated medical equipment from various countries. INS Talwar is the first vessel under this operation which embarked from Bahrain and headed back to India to reach New Mangalore Port Trust

The liquid medical oxygen containers will be transported to the destinations decided by the state government. The Port extended all its resources for berthing of above vessel and handling of two oxygen containers free of cost basis as per the directives of the union ministry of ports, shipping, and waterways. Local Customs authorities on direction from Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs too were on hand to ensure expeditious clearance of this life-saving cargo.
