INS Kolkata Brings Medical Aid From Kuwait to New Mangalore Port

New Mangalore Port, gateway to Karnataka on May 10 handled INS Kolkata, the second Indian Navy warship to call on the port as part of the ongoing Samudra Setu II operation launched by the maritime defence force of India. The Port on May 5 had handled INS Talwar which reached Indian shores with urgently needed medical supplies in the nation's quest against the surging second wave of the global pandemic from the Kingdom of Bahrain. 

Various nations in their endeavour to contain and eliminate the pandemic have been helping India by supplying oxygen, equipment and other medical aid. NMPT as part of this endeavour handled one more Navy vessel - INS Kolkata which was carrying two oxygen-filled tanks of 20 metric tonne capacity each in ISO tanks, 200 oxygen cylinders packed in 10 pallets of 10 MT and four high flow oxygen concentrator of 10-litre capacity received from Kuwait.

The aid cargo was loaded on to INS Kolkata which sailed out from Shuwaikh Port, Kuwait on May 5m the day INS Talwar incidentally touched base at the port. This is one among the nine vessels under the SamudraSetu-II operation that the Indian Navy has launched. The port accorded the highest berthing priority to the Naval vessel which arrived at 2pm. The Government of Kuwait has donated the above medical oxygen and medical equipment to the Indian Red Cross Society.

INS Kolkata is the second such vessel carrying medical aid to reach NMPT under the operation launched by the Indian Navy. Dr K V Rajendra, Deputy Commissioner, Dakshina Kannada district, Akkaraju Venktaka Ramana, chairman, New Mangalore Port Trust MLAs Dr Bharath Shetty Y, Umanath Kotian and senior officers of the Port, Indian Navy and Coast Guard were present at the operation site to monitor smooth disembarking of the cargo off the vessel.

Ramana expressed the readiness of the Port to handle such situations and contribute in every possible bit towards the country’s fight against the pandemic. The liquid medical oxygen containers were sent to the destinations decided by the state government. The Port extended all its resources for berthing of the above vessel and handling of oxygen containers, oxygen cylinders and high flow oxygen concentrators on a free of cost basis as per the directives of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
