Indian Coast Guard apprehends four Myanmarese poachers off Barren Island

Indian Coast Guard true to their motto - Vayam Rakshamah (We Protect) apprehended four Myanmarese poachers fishing illegally in Indian waters off Barren Island close to the coast. In a swift operation, Indian Coast Guard ship Rajshree on routine patrol sighted a boat in the early hours on May 2. The CG ship tried to establish communication with the boat, occupants of which however did not respond. On realizing the presence of CG ship, the boat increased speed and entered the shallow waters to evade.

The CG ship that increased speed to intercept, however, could not do so due to depth restrictions. The CG ship promptly responded by lowering the ship’s boat and dispatched a boarding party for investigation/ interception.  To escape apprehension, the poachers ditched their boat on the rocky shores of Barren and tried to flee into the Island. Swift response and counter maneuver by CG boarding party resulted in the apprehension of two poachers, while others managed to escape into the dense forest in the island.

The boarding party also recovered fish catch including sea cucumber, turtle skull, and conch shells from the ditched boat in Indian waters off Barren Island. Persistent efforts by CG ship to search for missing poachers resulted in the apprehension of two more poachers on May 3. It is suspected that some of the poachers are still hiding in dense forests on Barren Island. Indian Coast Guard shared this information with local police, forest department, and fisheries authorities.

The CG ship is in search of remaining poachers and handed over the apprehended poachers to local police at Port Blair on May 4 for further investigation.  This is the second apprehension by Indian Coast Guard in 10 days which highlights the force’s commitment to protecting the sovereign rights of India within its maritime zones. Indian Coast Guard in coordination with local police will carry out a joint search operation for missing poachers on Barren Island, ICG spokesperson asserted.
